Large hanging or quilt of a ceremonial bed embroidered in go - Lot 338
Large hanging or quilt of a ceremonial bed embroidered in gold with the arms of the Habsburgs, China (Macau) for the court of Spain (?), early eighteenth century. Satin fields richly embroidered in embossing and gold metallic threads of abundant exotic vegetation and foliage friezes among which we distinguish birds and 4 lions with red silk eyes in spandrels. In the center of the composition, the crowned double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire with its outstretched wings and curved feathers evoking the phoenix betray an interpretation and the workmanship of Chinese artisans. Large fringe braid of gilded metallic thread (good condition considering its age, some stains and areas of fusing of the silk on the side edge. Dim: 2.60 x 2.50 m in 5 strips of satin assembled and lined. This hanging, which integrates elements of design and aesthetics both Western and Asian, whether in the design of flowers, phoenix-like birds or foliage scrolls, belongs to the first group of special orders for a Europe eager for "Chinoiseries". Example of a similar hanging executed in silk and gold at the Hermitage Palace in St. Petersburg.
