Rare "La Musique" tapestry from the Liberal Arts hanging, pr - Lot 237
Rare "La Musique" tapestry from the Liberal Arts hanging, probably from the Paris workshops, surrounded by a border attributed to Jean Cotelle, circa 1650, 17th century. Music is one of the four Liberal Arts, along with Mathematics, Geometry and Astronomy. The others are Grammar, Dialectics and Rhetoric. I This concert scene, with instruments typical of the period (oboe, triangle, viola da gamba, etc.), is entitled MUSICA in the central cartel of the border, decorated with putti, garlands and medallions at the corners illustrating musicians. Jean Cotelle in the Oxford Ashmolean Museum. It is not the Bruges version of the Arts Libéraux recently donated to the Musée du Louvre, nor the one woven at Audenarde in Loches. An Elizabethan petit point tapestry with the same theme and taste was presented at the Biennale by Galerie Yves Mikaeloff (1988). This rare scene probably comes from the Parisian workshops of Faubourg St Marcel or Faubourg St Germain. H: 2.88 m - L: 4.16 m Used restorations, oxidized brown, restoration under the central cartel, a fold of about 26 cm is made under the border.
