École ANGLAISE du XIXe siècle - Lot 54
École ANGLAISE du XIXe siècle Portrait of Walter Scott Pastel. 31.5 x 24.5 cm Provenance : Jules Strauss Collection, Paris ; Eugène Kraemer. A Scottish poet and novelist, Walter Scott is considered one of Britain's greatest writers, and one of the fathers of the historical novel. Trained as a barrister, he began by publishing stories, mostly in the popular tradition. He then turned to the Romantic-inspired Scottish historical novel, exalting Scottish national sentiment, including the most famous Waverley, Ivanhoe and Quentin Durward. Anecdotally, he was instrumental in bringing back into fashion the tartan and kilt banned in the 18th century.
