CHINE - XVIIIe siècle - Lot 51
CHINE - XVIIIe siècle Bamboo statue of a dignitary with a snake's head, kneeling (one of the twelve animals of the zodiac). Height: 9 cm From the former collection of the Marquis de Chasseloup-Laubat (Lots 51 to 135) Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat, eminent Conseiller d'État and Minister of the Navy and Colonies under Napoleon III, began collecting art and archaeological objects, which he discovered while managing Cochinchina, giving his name to the French Lycée in Saigon, and signing the first commercial and military agreements with Japan. His son Louis, an engineer specializing in ship design, enriched the collection over the decades and through his travels in Asia, particularly Japan. François, his grandson, inherited the passions of his forebears, and traveled all over Asia, becoming a renowned explorer. He was the first to penetrate as far as the center of English Malaysia, bringing back previously unpublished documents on the still unknown Sakai tribes. He spent several years in Indochina and China, comparing his archaeological discoveries with those of his friend Père Theillard de Chardin, and also traveled to Korea, Japan... The collection was also completed by his sister Magdeleine and her husband Achille, Prince Murat, during their world tour of America and Asia in 1926/1927. The pieces we present here were part of an important ensemble, acquired over the decades by three generations of the family and now dispersed, and offer enthusiasts some rarities, such as this important group of particularly well-preserved archaic bronzes.
