Sonia DELAUNAY (1885-1979) - Lot 236
Sonia DELAUNAY (1885-1979) Album, 1916 Watercolor gouache, signed and dated lower right. 21,5 x 22,5 cm Mrs. Carla Melissa Gabardi, an important collector, has dedicated, with her husband, all her life to art: she on Art Deco and 20th century jewelry, he on medieval art and ancient weapons. An expert and specialist in 20th century jewelry, she is the author of a series of international monographs on the subject, translated into several languages. Tackling a field of research still little explored, with her first monograph Gioielli anni '40 published in Milan in 1982, the volume Gioielli anni '50, published by Giorgio Mondadori, in 1986, the jewelry of the Art Deco to the 40s (Paris, Les éditions de l'amateur, 1986), Art Deco Jewellery, 1920-1949 (Woodbridge, Suffolk, The Antique Collectors' Club, 1989); she is also co-author of several volumes. She was the author of the first monograph devoted to Jean Després, master goldsmith (Jean Després bijoutier et orfèvre entre Art Déco et modernité, Paris, 2009) published by Norma éditions and by Idea Books in Milan. In 2009, she curated the exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris "Art Deco and Avant-garde Jewelry", which brought together a wide selection of goldsmithing and jewelry, signed by the astonishingly topical avant-garde designer Jean Després, as well as works by other protagonists of art deco. In 2016, she curated for the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan, the exhibition "The Italian Jewel of the 20th Century". Very generous, she bequeathed important objects to some Italian museums as well as to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. In her will, she wanted to create the "Carla Gabardi Minervino Foundation" in Milan, with the aim of maintaining and presenting to the public the collections gathered during a life dedicated to art, but also to promote culture. The proceeds of the sale will be used to finance the activities of the foundation that bears her name.
