Miguel BERROCAL (1933-2006) - Lot 193
Miguel BERROCAL (1933-2006) La Menina II (opus 117) tribute to Rafael Alberti, 1972-1973 Proof in gilded bronze, signed, inscribed and numbered 960/2000. Height: 34 cm Sculpture composed of 23 elements. Miguel BERROCAL (1933-2006) Miguel Ortiz Berrocal was born in Algaidas (Malaga). He began studying mathematics and chemistry in Madrid and also architecture before becoming a student of the sculptor Angel Ferrant. He enrolled as an auditor at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and took courses at the School of Arts and Crafts and the School of Graphic Arts. He soon participated in numerous group exhibitions, especially in Paris (Salon de Mai, Salon de la jeune Sculpture, FIAC, etc.), but also in Italy and in most European countries. His first solo exhibition, before many others, was held in Rome in 1958. Miguel Berrocal won the first prize for sculpture at the Biennale des Jeunes de Paris in 1966. It was at this time that he decided to impose himself in the art of multiple works and he gave himself the means to do so. Thus, he created his own foundry. A foundry that would be used by many European artists, he added a printing press. Berrocal allows the sculpture to enter the "market" of the multiple. From 1955 to 1958, he produced welded metal works; in 1958, he saw a new possibility that would become recurrent in his work: the interlocking of pieces that fit into each other to achieve the final work. The mastery of this technique will come in the early 60s. He will look for his major themes with a classical or neo-classical approach in antiquity, in baroque art, multiplying "mutilated victories" or "torsos of warriors", but also in modern art with interlocking forms.
