Camille CLAUDEL (1864-1943) Head of a slave Proof in patinated bronze, signed, numbered 6/8, Coubertin founder. Height : 13 cm Post-mortem casting of 1994 from a grey clay, circa 1885. Issued in eight copies numbered from 1 to 8 and four proofs numbered from I to IV. Bibliography : Camille Claudel retrouvée, catalog raisonné - Nouvelle édition Corrigée et augmentée par Reine-Marie Paris, Éditions Aittouarès, Paris, 2004, a similar copy is described and reproduced on page 238, chapter 14. A certificate from Reine-Marie Paris, the artist's great niece, dated March 26, 2004 and a certificate n°00228 will be given to the buyer. Provenance : Sale Pontoise, December 15, 2001. The catalog raisonné indicates on page 236: Camille's participation in "La Porte de l'Enfer" was already attested by some works kept by the artist, notably for the head study for "L'Avarice et La Luxure". However, in the absence of a signature, we could only speculate based on similarities of features. With this raw clay, which bears the signature of Camile Claudel, the authorship of the work cannot be disputed. Rodin commissioned Alexis Rudier to cast this head in 1898, i.e. after the two sculptors had finally broken up. The bronze which appears in Tanckock's book (La Sculpture d'Auguste Rodin), bears on the left neck, not the signature of Camille, but that of A. Rodin. With this work, we have the flagrant proof of Rodin's appropriation of Camille's work. The bronze by Rudier was listed under the title "Head of a blind slave". It is a head of the damned for the "Gate of Hell", which places the work at the beginning of the collaboration between the two artists around 1885. Two peculiarities of Camille's art should be noted: the closed eyes, which she loved, and the open mouth, which allows a song to emerge, a theme that she would later take up in her "Old Blind Man Singing".
