[ALEMBERT (Jean Le Rondd'), SUARD (Jean-Baptiste Antoine) & alii/MANUSCRITS]. "Letters written from England in June and July 1768" and other pieces. A collection of 125 miscellaneous manuscript pieces of the 18th century in a volume in 4°, red morocco with flap, gilt serrated border framing the boards, spine ornamented, gilt edges, semis of flowers adorning the spine of the flap and portfolio on the back of the first board (period binding). 272 pp. (of which 26 blank, pp. 43-66 & 79-80) + 3 leaves of table. Contains in particular: - "Letters written from England" (pp. 1-42), - "Questions on England" (pp. 67-78), - "Letters written from London" (pp. 81-95), - "Letters from M. le Chev. de Boufflers" (pp 121-140). A handwritten inscription of the time on the back of the first cover indicates that: "This collection comes from Dalembert who wrote many pieces in his hand. It then belonged to Mr. Suard, the letters written from London are from him. Mr. [François Nicolas Vincent] Campenon [† 1843] who owned it after the death of Mr. Suard [in 1817] gave it to me. [See page 146 and in many other places the handwriting of d'Alembert." And on the front of an endpaper is this: "This volume was given to me by M. Campenon several years ago. The letters written from England are from M. Suard. It contains several pieces written by the hand of Dalembert particularly the small memoirs to Made Geoffrin p. 202 and others. There are many things likely to be collected. [Same initial as above] June 1838. ATTACHED: a folio in-12 bearing a few handwritten lines from the period and four flying engraved portraits, two by d'Alembert, one by Suardand one by Campenon.
