Bears the inscription "CANOVA" on the book. H: 41 cm Accident to the right thumb. This work has often been associated with the representation of a Child reading to form a pair in the neo-classical style illustrating the subject of the study very fashionable under the Empire and shortly before. Versions are known especially in cookie, in an edition of the manufacture of Dihl and Guérhard. The first known bisque model (Münich Rezidenzmuseum) had a later inscription in metal letters on the shelf: Es lebe Karl Theodor, Charles Theodre of Dalberg, the last archbishop-elector of Bavaria, probably its first owner. Here the inscription has a different meaning: the young child writes the name "Canova" as a tribute to the greatest neo-classical sculptor in Europe.
