Duchy of Burgundy, late 15th century. - Lot 201
Duchy of Burgundy, late 15th century. Saint Jerome Sculpture in high relief in limestone, rough back. H: 57,5 cm Restorations (cardinal's hat, left hand and lion broken and glued back together, front left part of the base) and accidents. The Father of the Church Saint Jerome is identifiable here by his cardinal's hat, the vulgate he holds in his right hand and the lion he has cared for that licks his left hand. This work testifies to the persistence in the Burgundian territories of the style of the famous Spanish sculptor, image-maker to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, Jean de la Huerta (1413-1462). Like the holy bishop in the Rolin Museum in Autun (n°inv. ML.1305) or the one preserved in the chapel of Saint-Jacques - Saint-Philippe in the church of Nolay (Côte d'Or), his face is broad and angular, with a strongly square lower jaw. Likewise, the forehead is low (this narrowness is accentuated by the width of the hat's brim), his large flattened cheeks, the small mouth forms a circumflex accent and his half-moon eyes with eyelids and superciliary arches are well marked. His costume also has "brittle" folds spreading out on the ground and three inverted V-shaped folds in front, of Flemish and Germanic influence, which can be found in some mature works by Jean de la Huerta (cf. Saint Denis, church of Moutiers-Saint-Jean).
