Léon Joseph Florentin BONNAT (1833-1922) - Lot 109
Léon Joseph Florentin BONNAT (1833-1922) Portrait of a monk in profile, 1900 Oil on canvas, signed and dated upper left. (Restorations). 41.5 x 38 cm This painting, signed and dated, is very much in the style of the works of Léon Bonnat and the canvas mark on the reverse of the painting is consistent with the date inscribed. This portrait, by the treatment of the face and the background and by its format, can be compared to other portraits painted in Italy between 1858 and early 1861, probably at the request of Bernard-Romain Julien (1820 - 1871) Some of these heads are, moreover, prior to the trip to Italy, such as the Portrait of an Old Man acquired by the Bonnat-Helleu Museum in Bayonne in 2017 representing an old man in mid-body, with a long white beard, wearing a tunic or a robe of the monks' habit (even if the format is different). The work is in fact dated 1856, when Bonnat was attending the studio of Léon Cogniet (oil on canvas, 103.3 x 81.3 cm, inv. 2017.2.1). These works show above all the influence of 17th-century Spanish painting on the artist. The study of the face is also reminiscent of certain figures of the Northern Schools by Jacob Jordaens and especially by Rembrandt, whom the Bayonne painter admired greatly. Around 1900, Bonnat's brushstrokes were more fragmented than in his earlier portraits, especially in the treatment of the background (with gradations ranging from red to dark brown). This is evidenced by the portraits painted the same year as this "monk": that of Émile Loubet, Madeleine Rivet and Frederick F. Thompson. We do not find this specific touch in this painting, can we deduce that it is a study for a larger composition? Or does the sobriety of the background correspond to the quality of the model?
