Manufacture POULARD PRAD à NAPLES - Lot 218
Manufacture POULARD PRAD à NAPLES Pair of exceptional large porcelain vases probably ordered for the Court of Naples or for Caroline Murat. With allegorical polychrome decoration, on one side, one praising the fertility of the soil, the other praising the geographical location of the kingdom by the sea. The first one presents an allegory of abundance, a young girl crowned with ears of wheat, holding a sickle in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left hand, a group of young peasants kneeling on the left seem to thank her (one of them holds the "Zampogna", an instrument from Abruzzo), for the benefits she gives them. In the background, a ploughman is pushing his plow pulled by two oxen, while a reaper is at work. The second vase is dedicated to the sea and its products, Neptune on the left stands majestically on a chariot drawn by sea horses, while fishermen on the right, seem to be giving him thanks. The caravels at sea remind us of the maritime vocation of the kingdom. On the other side of the vases, trophies symbolizing agriculture and fishing are represented on an azure blue background. The scenes occupy all the space of the cartridges enclosed by a gold braid. Neck and pedestal enhanced in gold. Exceptional handles in chased and gilded bronze, ending with heads of winged women, the base of the body dressed in gilded bronze with petals. Square marble base. Beginning of the XIXth century, Poulard Prad factory (1812-1814) (resumption at the base of one). Related works: Two vases in the Capodimonte palace in Naples, one in the Caserta castle and four in the royal palace of Nymphenburg. Total height: 67 cm
