Fragment of tapestry representing the right... - Lot 206 - Thierry de Maigret
Fragment of tapestry representing the right part of the tapestry "The return of the Hunts of Diana" in which one sees a sleeping nymph and another nymph holding in lead three greyhounds, hanging of the Metamorphoses of Ovid, after Charles de La Fosse (1636-1716), about 1699- 1736, manufacture of Gobelins, workshop of Jans fils. A hanging of Diana was delivered in 1736 in the stores of the manufacture of Gobelins and in 1760 Soufflot, director of Gobelins received the order to deliver one to the marquise of Pompadour. A tapestry "Le retour des Chasses de Diane" is in the collections of the King of Spain, another one was sold at Drouot on May 7, 1897, and the one kept at the Fontbeauzard castle was sold in 1863. As P. F. Bertrand, some of the weavings of Ovid's Metamorphoses come from the private workshops of the Gobelins' entrepreneurs and are not included in the official production of the Gobelins. The workshop managers worked from cartoons belonging to the king or from cartoons that belonged to them. Bibliography: - M.
