Miniature from a Rasikapriya - Lot 90
Miniature from a Rasikapriya Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. North India, Orchha, circa 1615. (Visible wear, small losses in the margin). 20 x 17.5 cm Provenance: French private collection, catalogued in the collection as acquired in March 1995 at Drouot (expert Kevorkian). This painting is part of a series dating from the early 17th century that compiles illustrations from the Rasikapriya, an Indian poetic narrative written around 1591 by the poet Keshavdas, which explores love relationships in all their various passions. An important set of paintings from the same group is published by Konrad Seitz in his book Orchha, Datia, Panna: Miniaturen von den rajputischen Höfen Bundelkhands 1580 - 1850 (2015, Band II, Hanstein Verlag, figs. 5-1 to 5-37). The miniature has an 8-line devanagari inscription on the back.
