Southern Bavaria, Lake Constance region, first third of the - Lot 117
Southern Bavaria, Lake Constance region, first third of the 17th century Saint Anne Trinitarian High relief sculpture in limewood, polychromed with traces of gilding and silvering. 155 x 41 x 27 cm Restorations, missing elements (original crown replaced by a later silver crown, halos or rays around the heads of St. Anne and Christ, necklace beads and some fingers) This carved group representing St. Anne Trinitarian is a rare testimony of the artistic production of the first third of the 17th century in Southern Germany, around Lake Constance. It illustrates a popular iconographic theme that was already in use in the 13th century and that lasted, adapting to the new recommendations of the Counter-Reformation, until the Baroque period. Here Anne assumes both a matriarchal dimension and a protective role towards her daughter, Mary, represented as a little girl, next to her mother, while the latter carries the infant Jesus in her arms. The artist has rightly rendered the strong emotion of the group through his mastery of the mannerist style visible in the complex positions of the characters, the representation of movement, the richness of the clothes and the polychromy. All these details, associated with the contrast given by the gravity of the faces with interiorized expressions, also testify to the premises of Baroque art in its most promising manifestations of the beginning of the 17th century, carried by the workshops of Swabian sculptors.
