"Saint Robert of Molesme and Cîteaux" - Lot 190
"Saint Robert of Molesme and Cîteaux" Rondel in grisaille, silver yellow, sanguine. In a country landscape surrounded by ruins, in the background we can see the abbey of Cîteaux or Molesme. In a cartouche a mark perhaps that of a glass painter? Robert wears a mitre decorated with cabochons, precious stones and pearls. He is dressed in an alb and a large damask ceremonial coat. He carries a holy book in his left hand and an episcopal crosier. Saint Robert de Molesme (c. 1029-1111), canonized in 1220, was the founder of the abbey of Molesme and later of Cîteaux. He is considered the co-founder of the Cistercian order with Albéric de Cîteaux and Étienne Harding... French work, around 1510. (Very good condition). D : 22 cm Provenance : Paris, 2011, Sale Drouot, study Me Rieunier, expert : F. de Lavaissière.
