Teofil Antoni JAXA KWIATKOWSKI (Pultusk 1809 - Avallon 1891) Couple under a tree Watercolor over black pencil lines, signed lower right in pen T. Kwiatkowki, inscribed on verso in pen T. Kwiatkowski / Paris no. 65. Rue de rennes 15,3 x 11,9 cm Teofil Kwiatkowski studied in Warsaw before participating in the insurrection against the Russians in 1830. Forced into exile, he lived first in Avignon and then settled in Paris where he frequented the artistic milieu, especially Polish artists in exile like himself. He befriended Chopin, and painted many of his most famous portraits. Kwiatkowski spent the second part of his life in the Avallon region, where he painted many landscapes.
