Portrait of a young boy in oriental costume, wearing the medal of the order of the crescent Oval paper. Signed in the center left Aubry/... On the reverse side an inscription in pen and ink Painted by/Aubry/in 1806/residing on rue Neuve/des Petits Champs n°18/in Paris. 14 x 10,5 cm The Order of the Crescent, instituted in 1799 at the initiative of Sultan Selim II, is considered as the ancestor of the Turkish orders. Intended to reward foreigners who supported the Ottoman Empire in its battles, it was never awarded to nationals. Composed of four classes, it was attributed for the first time to Admiral Nelson, winner of the French fleet in Egypt.
