Jean-Baptiste POLOSSON enlisted as a private in 1784 in the royal armies; as for a certain number of soldiers of the old regime, he naturally found his place in the ranks of the armies of the Republic. Lieutenant, in 1798; adjutant-major, in 1800 (year X); he was part of the first wave of nomination in the order of the Legion of Honor and was made a knight, in 1804; battalion commander in the 3rd regiment of line infantry where he took part in the battles of Essling, Eckmühl, Wagram... As a reward for his bravery, he was created Baron d'Empire, in 1809, with an endowment of 4,000 francs of income in lands located in the province of Hanover. The rest of his military career was, as in those days, tumultuous! In 1814, he was lieutenant-colonel of the 3rd regiment of line infantry. During the French campaign, he was commander of the fortress of Belfort. In 1815, he was reduced to half-pay. Surprisingly, he was named officer of the Legion of Honor in 1817. He died at the age of 91 in Nancy, 8 place de Grève, on April 18, 1856.
