Exceptional sword blade of one of the Dauphins of France : - Lot 143
Exceptional sword blade of one of the Dauphins of France : It is made of steel, with a lenticular section, identical decoration on both sides on a black granite background, and damascened with gold on three quarters. It is gilded in full, on the heel, on 4 cm, with decoration of acanthus leaves and foliages, then damascened of a frieze of flowers and foliages, on 22 cm, ending in a palmette; the middle of this frieze is decorated, in light relief, with the crowned arms of the Dauphin of France, surrounded by the great collar of the order of the Holy Spirit; the decoration continues with a series of fleurs-de-lis, alternating on three rows; the end is polished ice and ends in "V"; length 63 cm. The tang, with a square section, 12.6 cm, originally ended with a thread which has largely disappeared; this method of fixing the guard, with a screw, was only used in goldsmith's trade, for precious gold guards, often decorated with precious stones or diamonds, which may explain why this guard was dismantled at one time and, probably, the stones reused to make another piece. Total length 75,6 cm, width at heel 20 mm. Louis XVI period. Very good condition. List of the three Dauphins of France compatible, according to the size of this sword; it could only have been worn by a young child or a teenager: LOUIS AUGUSTE (future Louis XVI), born on August 23, 1754, grandson of Louis XV, Dauphin on December 20, 1765, acceded to the throne on May 10, 1774; he died on January 21, 1793. He was Dauphin at the age of 11 ½, for 8 ½ years. LOUIS JOSEPH XAVIER, son of Louis XVI, born Dauphin 22 October 1781, he died 4 June 1789, aged 7 ½. LOUIS CHARLES, son of Louis XVI, born 27 March 1785, he became Dauphin 4 June 1789, he became Royal Prince of France 14 September 1791, he died 8 June 1795, aged about 10. It is unlikely that a sword was made for him between June 1789 and September 14, 1791
