Honorary patent on partly printed parchment, vignette of the Republic by B. Roger, awarding a pair of honorary rods to citizen Pierre Godard, drummer in the 48th ½ brigade of the line, given in Paris on 28 germinal year IX of the French Republic, signed by Bonaparte (secretary), Alexandre Berthier, and Hugues Maret; dry stamp; 33.5 x 38.5 cm. (Ink wear in places, moisture stains). Consulate period. Fairly good condition. GODARD (or GODART) Pierre, drummer in the 48th ½ brigade of the line, born in the department of Eure; he was noticed in the army of the Rhine, in 1800 and 1801; at the crossing of the Inn, on 4 Nivôse year IX (25 December 1800) where he went to the bridge that the enemy was destroying, pursued it alone by beating the charge with one hand, while he sabred with the other, killed several Austrians, and facilitated by this trait of daring value the passage of his regiment and the rest of the army.
