Portrait of an officer, probably commissioner of wars, long hair and sideburns, a buckle in the right ear, in a blue coat, embroidered collar, red waistcoat or jacket, black tie; he wears on the left lapel the ribbon of the Legion of Honor marked: "Boulogne 1804"; oil on canvas signed and dated at the bottom right: "A. Bally pupil of David - year VIII"; gilt frame; 64,5 x 54 cm. (Six small repairs on the back of the canvas). Year VIII period. Good condition. BAILLY or BALLY Alexandre, portrait painter born in Paris in 1764, died in Marseille on January 31, 1835; pupil of DAVID and BRENET, he became known for his portraits, he resided in Nîmes where he was a professor at the Ecole Centrale, then in Marseille where he was a member of the Academy. He entered the school of the Royal Academy in April 1780 and was still working there in 1787
