Johann Ernest HEINSIUS (Ilmenau 1740-Erfurt 1818)
Portrait of Charlotte Félicité de Sainte-Aldegonde, née du Hamel, nursing her daughter Aglaé Canvas. Signed and dated lower left J. Heinsius. /pinxit 1774. 127 x 102 cm Charlotte Félicité du Hamel (b. 1752), married in 1770 Philippe de Sainte-Aldegonde (1747-c. 1773) They had an only daughter, Aglaé (1773-1848), future marquise de Louvencourt. Between 1770 and 1775, despite his duties in Germany, Heinsius had commissions in northern France: in Douai he painted the portrait of M. de Béranger, of M. and Mme Desmolins, in Lille the portrait of M. and Mme Lenglart, and the painting presented here. This rare portrait of a mother breast-feeding her child is in line with Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Traité de l'Éducation, published in 1762, which was very much in vogue at the time and is still read today: "Not content with having stopped breast-feeding their children, women stop wanting to do so; the consequence is natural.
