École FRANÇAISE du XIXe siècle d'après Claude MICHEL dit CLODION (1738-1814)
Satyress playing with a child Terracotta medallion. D: 25.5 cm In a gilded wooden frame surmounted by a ribbon in the style of the 18th century, D: 34 cm Related work: Claude Michel dit Clodion, Satyresse jouant avec un satyre enfant, de part et d'autre d'une guirlande ayant entouré un oeil-de-bœuf, 1782, bas-relief in stucco, H. 202 x W. 410 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, n°inv. R.F.3424. Related literature: Anne Poulet, Clodion, 1738-1814, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Musée du Louvre, 17 March-29 June 1992, Ed. Réunion des Musées Nationaux, model listed under n°39, pp. 213-215. The model of this medallion is the left-hand side of a stucco decoration made by Clodion for the courtyard of honour of the Hôtel Bourbon Condé. The original terracotta models were part of the collection of the architect of the Parisian mansion and friend of the sculptor, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, which was sold on 22 March 1792. Numerous terracotta medallions were subsequently made, those representing the left-hand motif differing from the original, particularly in the treatment of the vegetation.
