Bibliography: N. Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, London, 2006, online article (18th century French school). From the 18th century onwards, it was very fashionable to dress young children in uniforms. In the case of royal children it could be the miniature uniforms of the regiments assigned to them. Most of the time they were more fancy uniforms. Exotic hussar costumes, also known as "Hungarian-style", were particularly popular, probably because of the hussar regiment of Empress Maria Theresa, who was victorious in the War of the Austrian Succession. We can compare our portraits with a pastel attributed to Jean Martial Fredou with the same cap on it (Jeune garçon au château de cartes, vente anonyme, Paris, Tajan, 26 June 1998, no. 112, reproduced). At the Salon de Saint Luc of 1753, two pastels by Jean-Judde Roussel, The two children of the Count of Dresseu in hussar's clothing, were presented under the n° 159.
