Large Nevers earthenware plaque from the 17th century. Rectangular in shape, moulded in bas-relief with two figures, one standing holding a book and irons, the second kneeling at his feet, decorated in blue, ochre, green and manganese said "à la palette" au naturel, two gripping holes, cracks, small chips and chips. H: 40.5 cm - W: 27.5 cm For another plate with relief decoration of a crucifixion, attributed to Nevers and dated 1764, see by Claude Sageot, Quatre siècles de faïences françaises, Nevers, 1987, pp. 8 and 10, n°25. This plaque is most certainly a representation of Saint Leonard de Noblat, a legendary noble franc during the reign of Clovis. He is the patron saint of locksmiths, blacksmiths and prisoners.
