Rare "antique" patinated bronze inkwell in... - Lot 348 - Thierry de Maigret
Rare "antique" patinated bronze inkwell in the form of a circular receptacle with large gadroons supported by three winged newts; the cherub-shaped lid holds a paperweight with tassels of trimmings; it rests on large, clasped acanthus leaves. Padua or Venice, 16th century (missing). H: 28 cm This rare inkwell is made in the spirit of some rare works by Niccolo Roccatagliata, notably two inkwells illustrated in A. Gibbon, Guide des bronzes de la Renaissance italienne, Éditions Boisgirard, Paris, 1990, p.300-301, figs.319- 320. However, it should be noted that the most marked stylistic and ornamental similarities appear in works by Giuseppe de Levis and/or his workshop, particularly in the first one made in the spirit of this sculptor, which was formerly in the Abbott Guggenheim Collection (see the catalogue of the exhibition Renaissance & Baroque Bronzes, Abbott Guggenheim Collection, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1988, pp.64-65, catalogue no. 20); and in the second one, which belongs to the collections of the Museo Nazionale di Ravenna.
