Mid 19th century Sèvres porcelain plate. Mark in blue on the medallion with LP SEVRES 1843, gilder's mark, intaglio marks, inscribed on the reverse in manganese Chaulieu (Guillaume Amfrye de ) Poet, / born in Fontenai in the Norman Véxin 1639. Decorated in imitation of a cameo in left profile in bust inscribed GUILLAUME AMFRYE DE CHAULIEU and signed M, in a large gold medallion with palmettes and Greek frieze, post frieze and string of pearls on the fall, large frieze of gold flowered arabesques standing out on an agate background on the wing, gold filet on the edge, very small wears. D: 24 cm Provenance: From one of the services of the "Illustres" or "Iconographic French". Several versions of friezes were used for these services, mainly produced between 1832 and 1849; the various preparatory drawings are kept in the archives of Sèvres-Cité de la Céramique (Inv. Frises, 19th century, Frieze n.34 and 35). More precisely it would appear that the frieze used for this plate is called "laurier franc". Guillaume Amfrye, abbot of Chaulieu (1639-1720): Originally from Rouen, he studied in Paris where he met the Duke of Vendôme and his brother Phillipe, of whom he became an advisor. A libertine poet, his best-known collection of poems is Fontenay et la retraite.
