*Very rare officer's saber of mounted chasseurs of the Portu - Lot 323
*Very rare officer's saber of mounted chasseurs of the Portuguese legions in the service of France, perhaps the only known specimen: One-branch hilt engraved in gilded brass, oval mumps, the front one is engraved with a very beautiful crowned imperial eagle, pommel ending with a lion's head, rosewood fuse engraved with nets; very curved blade, golden and blued in the third, engraved with trophies, suns and foliage and marked, on one side: "VIVA B". JOÂO', signed on the heel: 'N. K"; length 102 cm. (Without scabbard). First Empire period. Good condition. These legions were created in 1808, after the arrival of JUNOT in Portugal, they included infantry, mounted chasseurs and artillery; they were led by General Marquis d'ALORNA, Baron de PAMPLONA, Emmanuel de SOUZA, PONTE de LIMA and de LOULÉ. In 1812, the mounted chasseurs, merged into a regiment, were placed in the reserve corps of the young guard and served in Smolensk, Krasnoë, la Bérézina, Smorgoni and Wilna, protecting a retreat during which their strength was worn out without remission. The memoirs recount the unnamed suffering of a troop totally bereft in the face of the rigours of the Russian winter.
