Beautiful flintlock rifle, two superimposed... - Lot 213 - Thierry de Maigret
Beautiful flintlock rifle, two superimposed barrels revolving by Le Page: barrels with two registers, octagonal then round, burnished, decorated with a gold fillet with thunder and mouths and a gilded pattern around the sights; they are signed, on the side panels, between two branches: "LE PAGE" and "À PARIS"; calibre 15 mm. Tail of breech engraved with flowers, numbered: "N 1". A single plate engraved with a hunting trophy, flowers and rinceaux, signed: "LES LE PAGE À PARIS"; swan-necked hammer engraved in continuation; the two half-plates each carrying a basin and a battery are engraved with foliage. Steel counterplate, cut out and nicely engraved with foliage and flowers; steel trigger guard engraved with a trophy, hinged to serve as a lock for the guns; coat plate engraved en suite. Stock in burr walnut, checkered grip; separate barrel, plain, with two rod holders. Wooden ramrod with bone tip finished with an iron pellet. Length 101 cm. Louis XVI period, modified at the Consulate or First Empire. Very good condition. It is probably Pierre LE PAGE, harquebusier in Paris, from 1743 to 1779 and Jean LE PAGE (1746/1834), his nephew, who succeeded him in 1779. He learned the profession of harquebusier, finished his apprenticeship in 1768; he became a master in 1780; he probably joined his uncle before succeeding him; he was harquebusier to King Louis XVI, the First Consul and then the Emperor, and also to Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, the future King Louis-Philippe. He is one of the most famous French harquebusiers. This rifle, whose locks date from about 1779/1783, underwent modifications made by Jean LE PAGE, to bring it up to date, at the Consulate or the First Empire. The barrels and the barrel seem to have been modified at that time. This kind of modification on expensive weapons was very common at that time and, most of the time, carried out at the original harquebusier. A children's shotgun is part of the gun collection at the Porte de Hal in Brussel
