Tapestry illustrating "L'escarpolette" on... - Lot 313 - Thierry de Maigret
Tapestry illustrating "L'escarpolette" on a background of stylized trees decorated with mottos and a thousand flowers in the lower part. 16th century. This tapestry probably comes from an episode of the Gombaut and Macé hanging, attributed to Bruges. 16th century. Wear, snags, old restorations and reweavings in the upper left and in the bottom from 20 to 70 cm high, comes from a larger tapestry. H: 2,60 m - W: 3,06 m These tapestries were for a long time attributed to Tournai or wrongly to the Loire Valley in certain publications, they are currently given to Bruges. This theme was taken up again in the 17th century by the workshops of Paris, Aubusson, Antwerp, Brussels, Enghien... The theme of Gombaut and Macé is attributed to the poet Henri Baude (15th century), author of Dicts moraux pour faire tapestry which are illustrated by the often moralistic but truculent and saucy mottos scattered on the tapestry.
