Pierre-François DELORME (Paris 1783-1859)
Portrait of General Count Gentil de Saint-Alphonse (1777-1837) On his original canvas stamped on the back of Vallée et Bourniche. Signed and dated upper right Delorme/1834 (highlighted). (Old restorations). 73 x 59 cm A pupil of Girodet, Delorme made his debut at the Salon of 1810. It is impossible for us to know if our painting is part of a shipment to the Salon (anonymous portraits in the booklets of the 1812 and 1833 Salons). Alphonse Louis Gentil de Saint-Alphonse joined the 3rd regiment of hussars of the French army as a volunteer in 1799 and was appointed second lieutenant on 18 January 1803. He was appointed lieutenant of the 4th regiment of hussars in 1804. He became aide-de-camp to Marshal Bernadotte on March 20, 1806. He took part in the campaigns of Germany and Austria in 1809, Russia (1812) and Saxony (1813). He was then assigned to the Italian army. He was registered as a hereditary count by letter patent in 1817 and was raised to the rank of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour on 1 May 1821. Here, the model bears around its neck the cross of COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF LEOPOLD in a military capacity (Kingdom of Belgium) and the plaque of COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF LEOPOLD in a military capacity as well. This plaque was only worn for a very short time after the creation of the Order in 1832, and was later abolished. On the right are the Officer's Medal with red ribbon and rosette and the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
