Signed and dated lower right or left "JH Ramberg 1805". 24 x 38 cm Ramberg was a painter, draughtsman and engraver. Noticed by the King of England George III, also Elector of Hanover, he went to London in 1781. He was a pupil of Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. Protected by the king, he worked there until 1788, taking part in numerous exhibitions. He then travelled to the Netherlands, Italy and Germany before returning to his native Hanover. Appointed painter of the Elector's Court, he continued to make numerous portraits for the royal family of England. At the same time he was considered one of the most brilliant draftsmen of his time, illustrating numerous books and the almanac. He engraved most of his drawings himself.
