École FRANÇAISE, 1826
Le château de la Napoule Pen and black ink, black and grey wash. Annotated and dated overleaf View of the château de Napoule belonging to the Marquis de Montgrand mayor of Marseille/drawn in September 1826 finished in wash in Bretonnière on 18 November 1829. There is something missing in the architecture, the mountains are much too close together. 29.5 x 22 cm The castle of La Napoule was built on an old castrum already known in the 9th century, belonging for a long time to the prince-bishops of Antibes. In the 14th century, the castle was sold to the de Villeneuve-Tourettes family, who owned it until 1719, when it was sold to the de Montgrand family. In 1876, the castle is bought by Mr. Charrier perfumer in Grasse who undertakes major work, building a mansion on the old foundations. In 1918, the property was acquired by Henri and Marie Clews who undertook a major restoration campaign and completely redesigned the garden. In 1951, it became the headquarters of the Association d'Art de La Napoule Mémorial Henri Clews, dedicated to international cultural exchanges.
