Saint Nicolas and Saint Stylianos Tempéra... - Lot 406 - Thierry de Maigret
Saint Nicolas and Saint Stylianos Tempéra on wood (26 x 18 cm) Greece, 19th century. Silver Oklad. Wear and tear, missing parts, restoration with false cracked varnish. Of all the saints honored on earth, Nicholas is certainly the most popular, most represented and most revered. Born in 280, he was bishop of Myre en Lycie where he died in 342. Faced with the advance of the Saracens in the 11th century, his relics were transferred to Bari in Italy. He is said to have attended the Council of Nicaea (325). He is the Holy Protector of sailors, prisoners and girls to be married, very close to men, understanding their weaknesses and needs, always ready to comfort them. Saint Stylianos, protector of children, is represented with a baby in his arms.
