Important mantel clock in sea green marble... - Lot 254 - Thierry de Maigret
Important mantel clock in sea green marble and finely gilded bronze with matt or burnished gold; it represents Apollo presenting his harp placed on the terminal containing the movement, which is decorated with arrows crossing crowns, dogs holding an arch or Athenian; quadrangular base with bas-relief representing the god on his stem; the sides flanked with ribboned crowns; base with alternating palmette friezes and feline feet. The enamelled dial, signed "Galle rue Vivienne in Paris" and "Bourdier Her", indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in increments of fifteen in Arabic numerals. Empire period. H: 75 - W: 49 - D: 25 cm The original composition of this clock, with its monumental proportions and excellent chasing and gilding quality, is characteristic of the most beautiful Parisian creations of clocks with mythological themes from the very first years of the 19th century. Bearing the signatures of the bronze-maker Claude Galle and the watchmaker Jean-Simon Bourdier, two of the most important Parisian craftsmen of the Empire period, it was registered as a ceremonial model and was apparently only slightly declined. Indeed, nowadays, among the rare clocks listed with identical models, let us mention in particular: a first example, the dial signed "Galle" and "Thomas", which is on sale on the French Art Market (illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopedia of the French clock from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, Les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 1997, p. 404, fig. B); as well as a second model, the dial signed "Lepaute et Fils", which belongs to the collections of the Palais Pitti in Florence and of which Marcel Gay noted, considering the height of 72cm and the width of 45cm: "The ratio of these two values is equal to 1.6 i. e. the golden number which adds an additional interest to this magnificent composition" (see M. Gay, "Horlogerie florentine", in Bulletin de l'Association nationale des collectionneurs et amateurs d'Horlogerie ancien
