One of the swords of honour made in commemoration of the Battle of Fachoda, one of which was presented by the newspaper La Patrie to Commander Merchant in 1898; these swords were made by the Auger house, goldsmith and jeweller in Paris, with some variations: Brass guard, chiselled, gilded and decorated with compartmentalized enamels; branch made of two Nile crocodiles facing each other, in the middle a jade beetle; the straight quillons end in an enamelled lotus flower; openwork keyboard representing the pectoral of Ramses II composed of the ram-headed bird, wrapping a marked cartouche with its wings: "FASHODA" and below the goddesses Nekhbet or Udjat, protectors of Egypt; the rocket depicts the goddess Hator in foot, the visible parts of the body lacquered black; articulated counter-keyboard also enamelled, engraved with the two royal cobras framing the solar disc. Diamond damascus blade with alternating grooves, type 1882, punched at the heel. Length 101 cm. (Without sheath). Back in 1899. Very good condition.
