Edouard VUILLARD (1868-1940)
Interior with Two Figures 1910 Oil on canvas 34 x 25 cm Provenance: Artist's studio Galerie Bellier, Paris Bibliography: Catalogue raisonné, volume II, no. VIII-367, p. 994. Interior with Two Figures is dated 1910, which places the scene at the "Pavilions," a summer rental villa in Cricqueboeuf on the coast of Honfleur in Normandy. The male figure is undoubtedly that of André Picard, a successful playwright and friend of Proust, and a regular visitor to the Hessels' house (Jos Hessel is Vuillard's dealer, Lucie is his mistress). The woman in pink is certainly Marcelle Aron (whose magnetism is well known when she appears 1), cousin and sister of Lucie Hessel. We thank Mr. Mathias Chivot -Archives Vuillard- for the authentication of this work and the commentary that he was kind enough to transmit to us. 1 Annette Vaillant, Le Pain polka, Paris, Mercure de France, 1974, p.109
