Rare oval snuffbox of present in tortoise shell, mounted and lined with gold 750 thousandths, entirely lacquered green, the lid opening to hinge is inlaid with a miniature oval portrait painted on ivory very probably representing the Duke of Choiseul-Stainville, in three-quarter bust to the right, wearing the grand cordon and the plate of the order of the Holy Spirit, in a surround of friezes of interlacing and garlands of flowers in gold. (Wear and tear and small missing parts). Paris, 1762-1768. Gross weight : 125.60 g - Height : 4 cm - Width : 8.2 cm - Depth : 6 cm. Etienne-François de Choiseul-Beaupré-Stainville, count then duke of Choiseul-(Stainville) (1758) and duke of Amboise (1764), is a French statesman, born on June 28, 1719 in Nancy and died on May 8, 1785 in the castle of Chanteloup. He was the head of the government of Louis XV between 1758 and 1770.
