Pierre PUVIS de CHAVANNES (1824-1898) - Lot 142
Pierre PUVIS de CHAVANNES (1824-1898) Study for La Guerre, circa 1861 Black pencil and estompe drawing heightened with gouache (oxidized) on several sheets mounted on paper, signed lower right. 63.5 x 60 cm This drawing is a Study for the central part of La Guerre, one of a series of compositions that Puvis de Chavannes created for the Musée d'Amiens between 1861 and 1865, but, as he himself wrote in a letter to Elie Fleury Fleury: "The paintings signed with my name that can be seen in the Musée d'Amiens were not all executed with a view to the place they occupy today; thus the paintings of "La Paix" and "La Guerre" were done at a time when I was unaware of the museum's existence (1861). The State acquired the painting of "La Paix", for the sum of seven thousand francs; in order not to separate these two compositions which formed a whole, I gave up the painting of "La Guerre" free of charge."
