Emile Maurice VIEILLARD (Le Havre 1867-Beaurepaire 1947) - Lot 71
Emile Maurice VIEILLARD (Le Havre 1867-Beaurepaire 1947) Study of a man with a shovel, for the Montmartre quarries in 1900. Pastel on brown paper. 41 x 34 cm Stamped on verso for the Maurice Vieilliard exhibition, Etretat, Galerie Delarue, July 28, 2001. Exhibition: Maurice Vieillard, Etretat, Galerie Delarue, 2001. Our drawing is preparatory to the painting La Carrière, painted by Vieillard around 1899 and probably exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts and then at the Salon des Indépendants under no. 986 and the title Les terrassiers. The painting belongs to a private collection. Vieillard was a pupil of Charles Lhuillier in Le Havre, before studying at the Académie Julian and the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was Steinlen's neighbor in Montparnasse, and took part in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Beaux-Arts. He left Paris for good in 1906, for the Normandy countryside. He then abandoned painting. However, he continued to produce drawings of animals - he was passionate about hunting - to illustrate hunting publications.
