Bibliography: G. Bazin, Géricault, tome VII, Paris, 1997, no. 2284, reproduced, (Le derby). And quoted on p. 26. Our watercolor is a preparatory drawing for the painting, painted in London in 1821 for the horse dealer Adam Elmore, with whom Géricault was staying at the time, and now in the Louvre (see op. cit. supra, no. 2268, reproduced).
