Attribué à Girolamo da CARPI (1501-1556) - Lot 16
Attribué à Girolamo da CARPI (1501-1556) The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche, after Giulio Romano Pen and brown ink 20 x 20.5 cm Inscribed on verso from the sale of the Marquis of B... Christie's June 4 1886... 116 / 12 Italian School: various subjects... a.l.c G. Romano et Giulio Roma. Our drawing is a partial reproduction of the fresco in the Psyche room of Palazzo Te in Mantua. Girolamo da Carpi stayed in Mantua in January 1549, where he executed a drawing based on Giulio Romano's frieze in Palazzo Te, Soldiers Crossing the River. According to G. Dauner, it would be surprising if the artist had not made more drawings after the works in Palais Te, so influenced was he by Giulio Romano (see G. Dauner, "A Travelling Cinquecento Artists: Sources for the Drawings of Girolamo da Carpi", in Master Drawings, vol. 43, no. 4, New York, 2005, pp. 488 - 489).
