JAPON, fours d'ARITA, style Kakiemon
A pair of quadrangular porcelain jardinières with polychrome decoration in enamel overglaze on two sides of a flowering hedge from which emerge a prunus and a parasol pine on which a phoenix is perched, and on the other two sides of a bird perched on a flowering branch. Circa 1670-1690. Adapted from a European gilt-bronze mounting on the base and neck, these "jardinières" were probably originally quadrangular bottles. H: 20 - L (one side): 11 cm See models from the Kyushu Ceramic Museum (Japan), plate 29, page 27 of the "Kakiemon" exhibition catalog, 1999. Although the porcelain is Japanese, Kakiemon-style glazes may have been applied in Europe (Netherlands) around 1710.
