Senior estates officer's or war commissioner's saber, single-prong silver hilt, hallmarked, filleted and engraved, sheaf of wheat chiselled on front, oval fluted cap on top, ebony spindle, checkered; curved blade with one hollow side, engraved in thirds, traces of bluing and gilding; leather-covered wooden scabbard with three silver trimmings engraved with wheat sheaves, rosettes and piaster falls, cut-out iron stinger; length 100 cm. (Wear). Late Directoire, Consulate period. Good condition. Attached is an engraving by Martinet, colorized, depicting a commissaire des guerres. POINÇONS; coq 1er titre de Paris, 1798/1809; grosse garantie de Paris; association des orfèvres; silversmith: "P. N. S" an acorn and a star on each side, SOMMÉ Pierre Nicolas, insculpation circa 1800, strikethrough before 1806.
