Fragment of textile in 2 strips, brocade and silk on canvas, - Lot 222
Fragment of textile in 2 strips, brocade and silk on canvas, richly decorated with polychrome flowers, 17th century, circa 1660. H: 181 - W: 70 cm This profusion of tulips, anemones, roses and other flowers can be found on a number of 17th-century table rugs embroidered in Europe by various tapestry and embroidery workshops. The designs were created by ornamentalists such as Paul Androuet du Cerceau (1630-1710) and Georges Baussonet, designers of Persian-style bouquets, which were very fashionable at the time and strongly influenced by Persian and Mughal flowers. Safavid Persia also used gold and silver metallic thread brocades, and we note the mention of certain Garde-Meuble table carpets indicated as gold and silver brocade with arabesque flowers. Even these elliptical indications show the interest of this document.
