CHINE - Lot 537
CHINE
Circular porcelain dish decorated in full Famille Rose enamels with fishermen catching fish with nets held in place by bamboos.
18th century (some chips).
D : 35.5 cm
This traditional fishing technique of the Tonkinese Thos or Annamites is still used today in certain regions of Thailand and Vietnam. The support for the carrelet is made up of two pairs of bamboos fixed at right angles and attached at their furthest ends to either a raft, a boat or a bank. A counterweight and a rope are attached to the arch to maneuver the device. The device is perfectly balanced and can be operated by just one man.
