Pitting and stains
Our drawing is a draft illustration for Hamlet and Guildenstern. It shows some variations from the lithograph published in Shakespeare's Hamlet, for which the painter made sixteen lithographs and twenty-one drawings (see W. Shakespeare, Hamlet, illustrated by Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1984, reproduced on p. 94).
Fascinated by Shakespeare, and especially by the character of Hamlet, Delacroix attended numerous theatrical performances during a trip to London in 1825. He illustrated several Shakespeare plays between 1834 and 1859, and painted some twenty pictures on Shakespearean themes.
