Saint FRANÇOIS DE SALES (1567-1622).
L.A.S. "Françs E. de Geneve," June 10 [ca. 1615-1621], to Mme Rivolat; 1 page folio (pasted and framed, glass broken; small hole in middle of letter, a bit soiled and dusty). Beautiful letter of spiritual direction and consolation to a grieving widow. "Knowing that you are a widow, my dear Daughter, I sympathize with the pain you would have felt in the separation you have suffered, and I urge you nevertheless not to let yourself be carried away by sadness; for the grace God has given you of wanting to serve him obliges you to take comfort in him; and the daughters of God's love have so much confidence in his goodness that they never become desolate, having a refuge in which they can find all contentment Whoever has encountered this source of living water cannot long remain altered by the passions of this miserable life. I know that you are ill; but, my dear Daughter, as your illness increases, you must increase your courage, in the hope that He who, in order to show His love for us, has cherished the death of the cross, will draw you more and more to His love and glory through the cross and tribulation He is sending you. However, I will pray to Our Lord for you and your past, and I hope that you will recommend me as often to the divine mercy... On the back of the frame, a long note from a former owner, M. de Gaudin (Pernes, May 3, 1842), on the history of this letter addressed to Mme Rivolat in Avignon, passed by succession and marriage into the Reynard de Mazan family, and preserved in the family chapel, then in the de Gaudin family, as "a family piece of furniture and a respectable relic".
