Rare politically oriented printed canvas scarf, Vale of Leven, Scotland, ca. 1792. Copper plate print in brown of a trompe l'oeil of playing cards and engravings of famous figures or scenes from stories in the late 18th century including: John Gilpin (1782-1795) His Britannic Majesty George III (engraving of 1792) The Honorable Charles Jame Fox (from engraving of 1780), The Rev John Wesley (1791) founder of Methodism but also Mary Queen of Scots, Louis XVI, George Washington, the Bastille... In 1790, in the Leven Valley in Printfield, there were 3 factories renowned for the quality of their prints on canvas or calico between Dumbarton and Loch Lomond.
